Spanish Wells

Spanish Wells

Spanish Wells, a small settlement off the northern tip of Eleuthera, carries a name tied to history. It is believed that Spanish explorers used the natural wells here in the 1500s to replenish their ships with fresh water before long voyages. Centuries later, in the late 1700s, British Loyalists arrived and established the island as a fishing community. Over time, Spanish Wells became famous as the heart of The Bahamas’ lobster industry, sustaining families for generations. Today, while the island is peaceful and modern, its history as a provisioning point, Loyalist outpost, and fishing hub remains central to its identity.
